3. Pirates Don't Change Diapers

When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up "anything" until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become... "babysitters? "Blimey!

4. I Can Be Fair!

5. Dandelions: Stars In The Grass

This cheerful book is a nice combination of rhyme and information. "The flowers begin to change one summer day. Their bright yellow petals fold up and fall away." As the dandelion's cycle is described, bright and pleasing acrylic illustrations extend the text, including insects that are attracted to this multitudinous flower. The bold black print dances through the pages, with an occasional word in another color for emphasis.

6. Yikes!!!

A young boy who appears to be on safari is shown with some of the world's most fearsome and exotic creatures. But at the story's end, readers are in for a surprise.

Scholastic: Up on Daddy's Shoulders

This picture book celebrates a day shared between a young boy and his father. Corvino's sunny paintings fill each double-page spread, in which the boy rides on his father's shoulders. In just a few lines of text on each spread, the boy describes the view from his new perspective: "I am as big as our great big house." Down the winding road to the zoo, the boy is able to "touch" the tops of trees and "fly" like a bird. He seems taller than giraffes and hills and clouds. At dusk, as father and son return home, the boy feels that he "can touch the moon and stars." The book ends with a sentence that reinforces the book's message: "Up on Daddy's shoulders, I'm the happiest kid in the world." Easy on the eyes and ears, this title's rhythm and attractiveness make it a fine read-aloud choice, especially at bedtime.

Scholastic: Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie

Ruthie, a fox girl, loves teeny-tiny things, so when she finds a miniature camera in the schoolyard, she claims it as her own. And lies about it when fellow student Martin tells their teacher, Mrs. Olsen, that the camera belongs to Ruthie. The rest of the afternoon is long for Ruthie, and at home that night, she ruminates over her crime until she finally comes clean with her parents. Having been counseled that honesty is the best policy, Ruthie, with much trepidation, tells her teacher and Martin what she has done. Mrs. Olsen praises her for telling the truth, and Martin forgives her, too. A real-life situation might not have such a happy ending, but this gets right to the heart of what children feel when they know they've done something wrong but don't know how to set things right. The sprightly artwork is cheery in all respects, except when it comes to Ruthie. With subtle brushstrokes, Rankin captures all the varied emotions Ruthie goes through: glee, defiance, worry, fear, and eventually relief.

Scholastic: Do Kangaroos Wear Seatbelts?

This warm and whimsical picture book opens with a little boy eagerly anticipating a trip to the zoo as his mother straps him into his car seat. Like most toddlers, he would rather run free than wear a seat belt, ride in a stroller, hold Mommy's hand, or climb into her backpack. As they pass various animal exhibits, the little boy asks teasing questions, such as "If I were a monkey, would I have to wear a helmet?" Mommy's light-hearted responses reveal, in a bouncy cadence, how animal and human moms alike keep their rambunctious young ones close and safe.

Scholastic: The Rain Came Down

An unexpected rainstorm blows into town. This makes the chicken squawk, which makes the cat yowl, which makes the dog bark, which makes the man yell, which makes the baby cry, and so on until everyone in town is in a bad mood. Will anything make the day brighter and stop all the fighting?

Scholastic: Alice The Fairy

Donning a fairy costume inspires a little girl's imagination in this droll picture book. Alice speaks for herself, claiming she can fly, can change her dad into a horse, can make herself disappear, and can turn oatmeal into cake by pouring on fairy dust. There are elements of danger, such as broccoli poisoned by the wicked Duchess (Mom) and baths (fairies hate baths), as well as mischief ("…my mom made cookies for my dad. So I turned them into mine") and mishaps ("Once I accidentally turned my white dress into a red one"). Alice knows that Permanent fairyhood requires a lot of tests, attending Advanced Fairy School, and learning how to "make clothes get up off the floor and… line up in the closet," so she'll "probably be a Temporary fairy forever."

Scholastic: Whoopi's Big Book of Manners

In her enthusiastically irreverent style, Whoopi schools kids on a bevy of oh-so-important manners like...courtesy words, cleaning up after oneself, covering one's mouth, knocking, how (and how not) to interrupt, apologizing, table manners, cell phone use, rudeness at the movies, how to be a good sport, respectful things to do when visiting another country, and the all-too-crucial... When and when not to stick anything up one's nose!

Scholastic: Smile a Lot!

A green frog has a mouth full of bright white teeth, which readers see often because he grins so much. He advises children to smile to help them get through life's ups and downs, including making friends, tricking tough guys, getting past a bad spelling test, visiting the dentist, and more. This is somewhat of a touchy message. Smiling and being positive in sticky situations can't hurt, but, realistically, kids need to know that such a strategy may not keep the tough guys away. Although Carlson suggests other behaviors to go along with the upbeat feelings, she does so subtly and some children may not pick up on those actions. That said, this title is best suited to adults and children together so that a discussion can ensue. Most of the bright, full-color illustrations are framed and rest above the text. The exceptions to this pattern are on pages that highlight the boldly printed words, "Smile a Lot!" They show the frog below the phrase, in a more open, outgoing pose, without any frame.

Scholastic: Louder, Lili

Lili is so shy and soft-spoken that she is almost invisible in her classroom. She fails to ask for what she wants and often ends up with what she doesn't want: a partner named Cassidy. Lili is the quietest kid in class. She spends recess inside with Lois, the class's pet guinea pig, and allows Cassidy do her talking for her, even if it means never getting to have the best parts in games. Sometimes it's just easier letting Cassidy be in charge, but will Lili have the courage to speak up when it means keeping Lois from getting hurt?

This warm, humorous story will speak to any child learning to find his or her own voice-and children used to being the boss might see themselves reflected in Cassidy's over-the-top antics, as well.
